After
four years of piano lessons, Mat Wilkins got his first guitar when
he was 11. Armed with a thirty year old nylon-stringed guitar that
used to belong to his uncle, guitar playing became just a hobby. At
the age of fourteen, Mat discovered the wonderful world of poetry.
He began to write poems upon poems, describing all the things he was
most frustrated or happy about. And then he remembered he could play
guitar. Not only that, but as he tried, he realized he could sing
too. Music was no longer a hobby, but had now become Mat's life.
Since then, he's been in such events as the Calgary Folk Festival
song writing competition, Toast N' Jam at Canada Olympic Park, and
Micheal Bernard Fitzgerald's choir at the Love and Manners concert
at the Jack Singer concert hall. Mat enjoys taking every chance to
make his music as different as possible, and takes pride in the fact
that nobody can completely pinpoint his genre.
